Jillas Cosplay by Aurinona Jillas Cosplay by Aurinona
This is the Project That Ate My Life (and left orange fur all over the house). - a costume of Jillas from Slayers Try. All of the costume parts were made by me. It was definitely a learning experience; I'd never made a shirt or a pair of pants before this, and the fursuit head was a long exercise in trial and error.

Although there are a few mistakes that still bug me, I'm pleased with the end result; he went to Nakamacon in Madison, WI (anime/furry/steampunk convention- two out of three ain't bad!) where he was stopped for many photos and came back with a shiny trophy from the costume contest. :D

Unfortunately, I didn't notice he'd lost a ball off of his belt until after this picture was taken. Oops.

P.S. Using foamies to stiffen glove cuffs? BAD IDEA. No breathing or wicking at all = gross. Lesson learned.

Thanks! I made this costume in May of 2010- I think I finished it the day before wearing it to a local convention! He'll be getting a new set of clothes in the near future, since I'm hoping to take him to Anime Boston and the old pants don't fit me anymore. :)

how did you make the head?
i'm researching on how to make one for myself for next year =3
Aurinona Featured By Owner Jul 9, 2010
The head is foam glued to a balaclava, then covered in fur- the method was pretty close to the one in Matrices' tutorial. Once the foam understructure is shaped the way you want, you can cover it in saran wrap and duct tape, then cut the duct tape off to make a pattern to transfer to your fur.

You can either sew the fur pieces together and make a sort of skin that you glue to your head, or glue the pieces on individually. Sewing looks nicer, but it's also more time consuming by far.

If you have any questions about a specific area, I'd be glad to answer them as best I can (this is only my second head, though I have plans for a few more) or you can check out the Fursuit Livejournal community. There's a lot of great stuff there. The memories contain all sorts of tutorials, and the members are amazingly knowledgeable about different construction techniques.

Good luck!

thank you =3
it's really good, i'm dreading making mine XD
does the mouth move on yours? if so how did you go about doing it? i've looked at a possible elastic one like in matrice's tutorials
Aurinona Featured By Owner Jul 9, 2010
It does move! I have a slight problem with my jaw not closing all the way because the teeth hit the roof of the mouth (oops), but I can still get some motion out of it. If I ever take him to another event, I'll probably go back in and tweak that.

There's elastic under there just like in the Matrices tutorial- basically, you need your mask's lower jaw to be tight against your chin, so when you open your mouth, it pushes the jaw down. The elastic provides some tension and helps hold it where it needs to be- it's pretty simple. If you don't have the elastic tight enough, you can stuff some foam inside the mask to give you a better connection there.

One thing to keep in mind is that fake fur doesn't stretch. I've read that you should make your fur pattern with the mouth OPEN to ensure that there's room for the jaw to move- I didn't think about that when I did this guy, and when I attached the jaw-fur to the cheek-fur, it wouldn't open all the way anymore. Ooops. I had to leave the corners of the mouth disconnected- the fur is long enough to hide the gap, but it would look better if I'd done things correctly. XD
littlekittyfox Featured By Owner Jul 10, 2010  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
opps XD
anyway thanks =3 i might not do a moving jaw on my first go but who knows maybe i'll be brave enough to try =P
thanks for your help <3 really appreciate it

Awesome! :D
It looks just like him!
Aurinona Featured By Owner Jun 10, 2010
Thank you! Getting it to resemble him was tough; I printed out a bunch of references and came to the conclusion that the animators are ridiculously inconsistent. o_O Glad you think it worked out!

oh my, oh my, it's Jillas-san!
The most amazing Slayers' cosplay that I have ever seen! *______________________* for now my lovely anime has become a reality :D
Great work ^^
Aurinona Featured By Owner Jun 10, 2010
Thank you; I think that's the best compliment I've ever received! The best part of art (in my opinion) is taking something that doesn't exist and making it real for just a moment.
Katrin-chan Featured By Owner Jun 10, 2010
You're welcome. You deserve for such a compliment. ;)
I can't imagine how you did that, sew everything together... wow, something wonderful and very professional! ^^
ameliagreywords Featured By Owner May 31, 2010
Wow, this is amazing!! Seriously, awesome costume, I can't even tell you how impressed I am because mascot suits are HARD!
Aurinona Featured By Owner Jun 10, 2010
Thanks! The head was *definitely* the most time-consuming part and there was a time in the middle of construction where I started calling it "The Poofy Orange Horror"; thankfully it shaped up when I shaved it. XD (I love your username, BTW! Amelia + Zel = adorable.)
