Thanks! Outlines drive me bonkers; I couldn't draw a smooth line if my life depended on it. The short answer to how I do it would be sketching lightly on one layer, then using the oil pastel in Painter (at about 10% opacity, though I vary it up and down) on another layer to block in colours, sometimes pull out "just add water" to smoosh things together, and then if I need to, I'll put a "multiply" layer on top and use the soft airbrush tool to deepen the shadows. By this point I've turned off the sketch layer at the bottom, which frequently doesn't much resemble the final piece anyway because I tend to change my mind about things once I start shading them. ("Oh, head's too small" "leg's in the wrong position", etc etc.) and then I start selecting and resizing, rotating, or erasing and re-drawing bits completely. I'd probably save a lot of time if I planned better, but I guess I like being surprised at the end.

Oh wow, I've never even really heard of people using Painter. Most people seem to use Adobe Photoshop (what I have), Flash, or Open Canvas. I'll certainly have to look into it!
